Research has proven multiple times how spirituality is related to better health outcomes. A school of thought denotes spirituality as a tool to help people cope with illnesses and sufferings. Everyone benefits from finding a sense of purpose and connectedness to their inner self, whether they have a connection to a religion or not. That is what spirituality is all about: finding meaning in your life.
Spiritual well-being affects the quality of life as it has a major influence on physical, social, and psychological well-being. According to a leading psychologist and brain health specialist, Dr. Ketam Hamdan, the human body beautifully encapsulates these fundamentals for healthy functioning. If any aspect is left ignored, it can leave a lasting impact on overall wellbeing. Spirituality is important to help us understand the greater scheme of things and cope with life experiences more profoundly.
Dr. Hamdan speaks from her personal experience with psychological trauma. Toxic relationship issues and struggles dominated her adult life, and despite being an accomplished consultant with an amazing job in Dubai, her absolute failure at managing personal relationships confused her. She sought therapy only to be disappointed with the traditional therapy models. Her two Ivy League degrees, corner office, and six figures salary seemed like a dream to others, but for her, life was empty and she desperately needed to find her purpose.
“Growing up, my mom always taught us if you are sad or unhappy, turn to God, and you will feel better. I did this for several years, and it helped at times, but it still didn’t heal or address why I was insecure or didn’t feel worthy.”
For Dr. Hamdan, true healing began only when she started integrating various pieces; her leadership skills, psychology, spirituality, neuroscience, and personal experiences to heal herself. Finding purpose helped her heal and live a more authentic and happy life. Today, she has acquired a Ph.D. in Psychology and is passionate about sharing her knowledge to demystify the process for others stuck in the same scenario as her.
Having a spiritual background, Dr. Hamdan believes that the ultimate path to achieve true happiness and personal healing is only possible by integrating and connecting one’s head, heart, and body.
Her approach to healing is a perfect blend of eastern and western counseling approaches. While the Western approach focuses more on psychopathology and medical science to counter psychological issues, the Eastern model primarily focuses on connecting the heart and body to find peace within. Dr. Hamdan takes the best of both worlds and intermingles both approaches in counseling.
Self-leadership and personal mastery are no longer a dream for many as Dr. Hamdan has opened the doors to her wisdom by creating her own safe space on Instagram: @brainhealthdoc. She uses the platform to aid major transformation in people, enabling them to bypass their mental blocks and embrace spirituality to lead a life of contentment.
