Google is seeking to employ an artificial intelligence system and algorithms from its innovation to develop weather forecast services to become more rapid and accurate, according to the newspaper “Daily Mail” British, quoting a publication in a blog for “Google”
Google describes the new paradigm, which it has developed as “nowcasting,” meaning instant prediction, and says it has shown initial success in being able to accurately forecast weather patterns with “almost immediate” results.
According to a new research paper, the innovative technology is capable of issuing forecasts of up to 6 hours in advance within a period of only 5 to 10 minutes, which means that artificial intelligence algorithms will outperform traditional models for predicting weather conditions even in the early stages, in addition to the fact Some traditional forecasts produce massive amounts of data, but they may take hours to complete.
Accurate and immediate forecasts
And there is a “huge advantage of machine learning,” Google said, “that mathematical reasoning is low in cost given that it is a (now casting) model that has already been trained, providing almost instant predictions with the same high-accuracy original input data.”
“If it takes 6 hours to calculate the prediction, this only allows 3-4 operations per day and produces forecasts based on historical data that exceeds 6 hours, which limits our knowledge of what is happening now. On the contrary, the prediction is Real-time is especially useful for instant decisions ranging from directing traffic, logistics, to evacuation planning. “
Google has compared the accuracy of its innovative system to three existing traditional models that use historical weather data between 2017 and 2019, and researchers have proven that the Nao Casting system performed equally well, if not better.
Although speed is one of the main advantages of the innovative “naming casting” model, Google says that instant forecasting is still less than traditional prediction methods when it comes to longer-term forecasts.
Consequently, it is unlikely that the new Google system will completely replace traditional prediction models, but it will be used to complement them and fill gaps for short-term coverage.
And the “Daily Mail” quoted the American magazine The Verge, that Google is not the only company that is developing new and advanced methods of weather forecasting, as both IBM and Monsanto are developing their own and evolving systems in the same field.
